New City, New Dentist: What to Look For in a Dental Provider

Tulsa dentistryWhen you are in an unfamiliar new community, you have lots to learn. If a dental issue should occur for you or a family member, do you have a plan to manage your dentistry needs after you’ve left home?

Once your move is permanent, you will likely want to consider your personal needs…maybe a dentist nearer your work location will be your best option. For family needs, your priorities may be different. Perhaps a dental provider closer to home would be best.

One of the best ways to find a dentist is to ask for referrals from your former dentist (if they know of someone in your new home area, they will be happy to share that information with you). If your former dentist can’t help, you might look to co-workers, family or trusted friends, referrals from your church, or your local chamber of commerce will be able to provide a listing of available dentists in your area of interest.

Online searches very often provide helpful information such as patient comments about dental providers so this might be an option for narrowing down your choices.

Your next step is to investigate what services are available from your selected dental offices. A family dentist that can offer a variety of treatments from cleanings and restorative work to periodontal services and endodontic treatment is invaluable.

You should then set up a time to check out the offices you are considering. Is the lobby clean and orderly? Are staff members friendly and helpful? Is there ample parking? Do they offer hours of service that will work best for you? Do they have after hours emergency care? Do they have sufficient staff to get you in quickly without a long wait? Do they accept your dental insurance? If a majority of your needs don’t fit with your first choice, move on. After all, you hope to enjoy a long-term relationship with your dentist.

Finally, don’t wait until a dental emergency occurs before making your selection. A hurried choice may not be in your best interest, so do your homework to assure you and your family will receive the best dental care available in your new home location.
