What you eat and drink; your lifestyle habits; sleep patterns; exercise; and outlook on life all play an important role in every aspect of a healthy life. Research links many illnesses to oral health concerns especially those chronic diseases that impact immune health. The great things you do for your teeth and gums will benefit the body as well.
Diet – Fresh fruits and vegetables are known to be much healthier than “junk food”. A diet high in vitamins and nutrients is essential. Some foods are best left for special occasions only. These are the foods and drinks high in sugar and empty calories.
Tobacco use – There are no healthy tobacco products. E-cigs have become popular, but they are not a safe substitute for cigarettes, cigars, or a pipe (or chewing tobacco). Tooth loss is much more likely to occur for a tobacco user … leading to costly, time consuming repair.
Sleep – Many patients that are under significant stress or daily pressures may find they suffer from teeth grinding and jaw clenching. This not only interrupts your sleep, but can do considerable damage to your dentition. Exercise and your general outlook on life are also important components to overall health.
In addition to getting diet, lifestyle, rest, and exercise under control, there are other things you can do to maintain healthy teeth and gums. Brush at least twice every day with a fluoridated toothpaste; floss every day to remove what your toothbrush missed; and visit your dentist every six months for a cleaning and dental exam.
A healthy mouth is certainly a gateway to a healthy body. If it’s time to schedule your next exam and cleaning, contact Howl Dental at 918-749-1626.
