Dental Myths that Could Harm Oral Health

Tulsa dentalYou’ve probably heard many of the myths surrounding dental care. Separating fact from fiction may help you maintain good dental health. Your dental provider is an excellent source of information, so rather than get the “facts” from family or friends, go to the source … your dentist.

Dental Myths

Daily brushing eliminates the need to floss … myth. Brushing only reaches about two thirds of the surfaces of your teeth. You need to floss to reach debris between teeth. In addition, correct flossing helps to stimulate gum tissue and control plaque build-up at the base of teeth.

Scrubbing teeth will get them cleaner … myth. You only need to use moderate pressure and a soft bristle toothbrush to adequately clean your teeth. The wrong brushing tools and technique can increase the likelihood of premature gum erosion and loss of protective dental enamel.

Whiter teeth are healthier … myth. Bright, white teeth may enhance your smile; but will not guarantee that your teeth are any healthier.

Many of my family members suffer from gum disease, so I will too … myth. While we inherit many traits from our ancestors, there are preventive measures you can take to make sure you don’t suffer from gum disease. Daily brushing and flossing, a healthy diet, and consistent visits to your dentist will help ensure you maintain great dental health.

Candy causes cavities … myth. Although high sugar consumption can help promote dental decay, there are many other reasons cavities can occur. While sugar may seem like the culprit, carbohydrates are just as likely to result in decay.

If I don’t have any dental pain, I don’t need to go to the dentist … myth. This couldn’t be more wrong. You go to the dentist to have plaque that has formed since your previous visit removed. Plaque that is allowed to grow can lead to dental decay and/or gum disease. In addition to having teeth cleaned and polished, a dental exam may find potential problems that can be treated before they escalate.
