Healthy Dental Habits to Follow

dentist TulsaVery few patients look forward to their next dental check-up, but following simple healthy dental habits can dramatically improve each check-up as well as enhance smiles. For the healthiest mouth, it’s recommended that patients visit the dentist for a professional cleaning and check-up twice a year, with additional visits during pregnancy or for patients with medical conditions that can negatively impact oral health.

Brush & Floss

Brushing and flossing are some of the simplest ways to keep teeth and gums healthy. Flossing removes plaque, food particles, and germs from between teeth and along the gumline. Brushing, when done properly with a fluoride-based toothpaste, keeps teeth clean and reduces the build-up of plaque on and around teeth. Plaque hardens over time and becomes tartar. Over time, tartar build-up can compromise the health of teeth and gums.

Rinse Away Acids

Acids from foods and beverages erode the protective enamel on teeth. While it’s difficult to avoid all acidic foods and beverages, taking a moment to rinse the mouth with water after consuming juice, fruit, candy, pasta sauce or other acidic foods can greatly reduce the presence of remaining acids in the mouth. It’s best to avoid brushing immediately after consuming highly acidic foods or beverages because the enamel is slightly weaker and brushing can wear away the enamel faster at that time.

Balance Life

Engaging in regular exercise, consuming a healthy diet with whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables, managing stress, and getting enough sleep are all ways to improve overall health. Oral health is significantly linked to overall health. With this in mind, when overall health is rigorously maintained, oral health will also benefit.

Visit the Dentist

Although twice-yearly visits are recommended for the average adult patient, more visits are also okay. If something is bothersome, such as an increase in tooth sensitivity or inflammation in the gums, it’s best to be seen and treated as early as possible to reduce the risk of a bigger problem developing.
