Children and Cavities
Many toddlers and children do not brush their teeth twice a day, as advised by their parents and dentists. In addition, these younger patients consume more sugary drinks, candy, and sweets compared to the older generation. This excess consumption of sugary foods and drinks increases the buildup of sugar and bacteria on their teeth, resulting in cavities.
While it is more common in children, you can still develop cavities as an adult. However, you can reduce your risk of tooth decay and cavities.
Preventing Cavities as an Adult
While it may be more challenging for children and even teenagers, preventing tooth decay and cavities by completing a few tasks each day is simple as an adult. To protect your mouth, teeth, and gums, complete the following:
- Brush – Although obvious to hear, you should brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day. Use toothpaste with fluoride for added protection.
- Floss – Flossing each day between your teeth is essential. This removes leftover food particles, sugar, and bacteria from between your teeth, reducing the possibility of decay, cavities, and gum disease.
- Exams – Visit a dental professional twice a year for regular exams and cleanings. Discuss the possibility of a sealant application, which will restore and protect the surface enamel of your teeth.
- Reduce – Children may drink sweetened milk, soft drinks, and juices in large quantity, but you may also be consuming excessive amounts of sugar in your coffee and tea. Reduce the amount of sugar you take in your daily beverages to reduce your chances of decay. Also, drink more water to rinse bacteria from your teeth.
Children may be more prone to developing cavities than adults, but these dental problems can affect patients of all ages.
